News from Øveraasen Snow removal systems

Cooperation Øveraasen AS – Oshkosh Corp.

In 2008 an agreement was made between the American company Oshkosh Corp. and Øveraasen AS, giving Øveraasen AS the sales rights for Oshkosh snow removal equipment to several countries in Europe.
Oshkosh is a large and reputable American manufacturer of heavy vehicles with deliveries both to the private sector and the military. The company is based in Wisconsin and the product range stretches from large military trucks, to fire trucks and snow removal equipment.
The first sales of the new Oshkosh snow blower type H2718B took place already in 2008 when Frankfurt Airport bought 2 pcs. and Sandefjord Airport 1 pc. Øveraasen AS has in total sold 6 machines of this kind in Europe.
The machine has a maximum capacity of 5.000 tons per hour and covers a gap between the UTV 600 and TV 1360 in Øveraasens own product range.
Øveraasen AS expects a substantial market for this type of machine in the years to come.

Oslo Airport Gardermoen takes delivery of the world’s largest snow blower

Oslo Airport has recently taken delivery of the world’s largest snow blower. The machine has been manufactured by the Norwegian company Øveraasen AS. The unique snow blower, which has been given the model description TV 2000, has an installed power capacity of more than 2000 HP.

The machine is based on the positive experiences from the previous TV 1260/1360, but differs form the previous model by having a separate MTU diesel engine OM 502 LA for the vehicle. This engine has a power capacity of 650 HP.

The blower head in front is driven by a V-16 S2000 MTU diesel engine. This engine has a power capacity of 1360 HP. The huge installed power gives the TV 2000 a maximum snow clearing capacity of 10.000-12.000 tons/hour at a casting distance of 35-45 metres.

The chassis itself is driven differential look.
hydrostatically by the help of variable Sauer Sundstrand pumps and motors. As a central transfer case Øveraasen is using the well proven Oshkosh 2-stage gearbox with
The main transmission to the blower head is a mechanical drive line with pump gears and reduction gears of Øveraasen’s own design. These gearboxes are even designed for a larger power capacity than the installed 1360 HP.

The unique sidewalls of the engine room are folded down hydraulically and give the maintenance people excellent access to the machine using the fold up/fold down platforms.

The rear grill folds down and creates a safe stairway to the platforms.

The maximum working speed of the TV 2000 is 60 km/hour. This speed is important and necessary to keep up with the high speed runway snow sweepers.

Later on this autumn Zürich Airport will take delivery of an identical snow blower. Øveraasen AS has options for additional units for 2009 and 2010.

UTV 430 / 600 MK II

As a part of our continuous product development, we have developed the MK II model of the UTV 430 / 600. The major improvement is the main transmission between the diesel engine and the blower aggregate. The new gearbox is based on the good experiences we have from the UPV 425 (UPV 150); Diesel engine – Drive shaft – Angle gear – Gearbox – Impeller – Drive shaft – T-angle gear – Feeding auger

The transmission is both designed and built at Øveraasen. It has a power capacity for as much as 600 HP and can therefore be used in both the UTV 430 and the UTV 600.

The snow blower was successfully tested during the spring 2008 and the MK II model will from autumn 2008 replace the older models.

Weight and centre of gravity is unchanged and we recommend it used in combination with 14-20 tons front end loaders.

Erik Skåden has the main responsibility for the design and layout.

UTV 180

After a long development period we were finally able to test UTV 180 this spring. It was successfully tested under tough conditions both by opening winter closed roads in the Norwegian mountains, and endurance tests in water.

The UTV 180 is the smallest of our two stage unit snow blowers. Its capacity is 1 000–1 200 tons/hour. The weight is app. 3 400 kilos.
It has a Mercedes/MTU diesel engine and both the auger and the impeller are mechanical driven. The rotating parts are secured against overload with share pins. The snow blower attachment is recommended used in combination with
10-14 tons front end loaders.

The snow blower is extremely effective for clearing drifts, widening roads as well as loading snow on to trucks in built-up areas.

Responsible for the development are Nicklas Jonsson and Thor Øveraasen.

100 years Anniversary celebration

On the 13th of March 2008 the Company Øveraasen AS marked its 100 years anniversary. On this date, 100 years ago, the brothers Hans and Even started their modest production at Vangstomta in Gjøvik.

It was a magnificent party with 150 guests; employees, retired employees, family, business associates and representatives from the local government in Gjøvik. The owner Thor Arve Øveraasen welcomed the guests to the banquet hall at the Thon Hotel, the hall decorated in blue and white to mark the company’s connection to winter and snow.

After the welcome speech Viggo Sandvik, the toastmaster, guided the guests through an evening full of entertainment and surprises. 3 short films had been made for the anniversary, showing the company’s history, technology and everyday life. They were, together with many great pictures, shown to the guests during the the fantastic dinner. In addition the guests could enjoy beautiful dinner music and entertainment of Anders Wenzel, Trond Nagel Dahl, Ingvild Pedersen and Viggo Sandvik.

Among the evenings great speeches we would like to mention the speeches from the assistant Mayor in Gjøvik, the trade union representative Ole Mauritz Smeby, Bjørn Enger, the retired employees’ representative and chairman of the board Are Langmoen.

The gift from the employees at Øveraasen AS was a painting of Thor Arve Øveraasen, who has run the company for more than 29 years. Thor Arve Øveraasen thanked the employees both for the painting and for their contribution. Without their cooperation, knowledge and determination the company would not have been able to celebrate its 100 years anniversary.

After dinner the entertainment continued, and many took the floor. The music was first class. The party ended officially at 1:30 AM, but some chose to continue the party a lot longer….. It was a good thing the company was closed the following day, and the Easter holiday was coming up for most of the employees.

The company Øveraasen AS would like to thank all the guests for their contribution to a great celebration, and for all the gifts and flowers.

An open factory day and a big Airport Seminar have been planned later in 2008.

2008 Anniversary year.

Øveraasen AS celebrates, in 2008, that it is 100 years since the brothers Hans and Even Øveraasen returned home from America, to start engine production in Gjøvik. The company was founded 13th Mars 1908, and was situated in modest accommodation in Wangsaga.

The development went, however, fast and the production rate of engines increased every year. They produced both stationary engines and engines for use in a variety of different boats.

In 1923 the company developed the worlds first car mounted snowplough, and within this area they had a nice growth in the years to come. It showed that this direction change was to found the bases for the existence of the company 85 years later.

Today Øveraasen AS is recognized to be one of the leading companies in the world on development, production and sales of heavy snow clearing equipment for road, railway and airport. The turnover is just over 200 million NOK and more than 75% is exported.

The anniversary will be market in different ways, with arrangements for customers and company employees. We will hold an open house for all interested 13th September 2008. The marking of the occasion will be finished with a large seminar for all airport customers in November 2008.

Øveraasen AS looks forward to continue our good cooperation with our customers, domestic and world wide in the years to come.
